Columbia, SC – A necessary conversation on school safety have been taking place all over the country in the wake of the fatal school shooting in Parkland, FL. In the South Carolina center, a school safety summit was held with teachers, law enforcement and mental health experts. Governor Henry McMaster suggest each school needs at least one trained officer. In the same meeting, a high school student suggested having one entrance point, several locked doors throughout the school and buzzing when visitors come into the front building. Edisto High School boast about Ident-A-Kid’s Visitor Management System. Their exterior front door is unlocked, but guests are locked out of an interior door until they clear a quick background check. Driver’s license are used to check-in. If the visitor passes, a staff member buzzes them in. There are also fences around what was formerly open courtyard on campus.
