While May is known for Cinco de Mayo, The Kentucky Derby, Mother’s Day and Memorial Day, there is a lesser known, but significant day – National Missing Children’s Day.

Since 1983, our Nation has observed May 25th as National Missing Children’s Day. First proclaimed by President Ronald Reagan and observed by every administration since; May 25th is the anniversary of the day in 1979 when 6-year-old Etan Patz (pictured above) disappeared from a New York street, while on his two block walk to his bus stop.

“National Missing Children’s Day is a reminder to all parents and guardians of the need for high-quality photographs and accurate descriptions of their children for use in case of an emergency, and for the need for everyone to pay close attention to the posters and photographs of missing children,” says the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
